We liked the view from Ava Lounge, the rooftop bar at the original Dream Hotel near Times Square. At the new Dream Downtown, however, the view from the roof is breathtaking. Although views west towards the Hudson are obscured by the neighboring Maritime Hotel, there is nothing in the way of the skyscrapers of Midtown, which stretch out across one's entire field of vision. The narrow outdoor area is furnished with black and yellow cushioned benches and garden furniture. The inside is more swank and includes leather banquettes in semi-private arrangements; but with dark wood lacquer and bulky metal trimmings, the overall effect is of a cheap 1970s airport lounge. There were some crazy parties here when the hotel opened, but we are keeping an eye on how the scene develops and will provide updates as necessary.
